Our Works Your Way
Often, the most innovative uses of our materials come from your creativity in the classroom. We're talking to our community to learn new and interesting ways teachers are using our works, and then sharing those best tips and tricks with you.
This month we talked to Regan Becker, a Lower Elementary Instructor at Community Montessori Charter School in San Diego, CA.
Our Simple Machines material is popular in your classroom right now. How do you introduce it into your curriculum?
The Simple Machine set works well for ages 6-9. It’s available on the cultural shelf that focuses on the 3rd Great Lesson. In the Montessori shelf sequencing, the basic basket (label and image only) is placed first, then the basket with the description cards is placed second (for older children or pre-readers with a literate partner). The set fits with both civilization studies (Egyptians) and geometry (study of triangles).
Have you used it in a unique or fun way?
During our Simple Machines unit, the children enjoy hunting for wedges and pulleys, etc. in the learning environment.
As an extension, children may use a box of building blocks that contains examples of the simple machines used in constructing a tall building. This is also a Practical Life activity, as it helps hone fine and gross motor skills.
What would you share with our community of teachers about this material?
The Simple Machine set allows children to work independently or with a partner, because the material’s helpful control chart can also be a control of error for older children trying to challenge themselves. The photos are clear and properly-sized.You can learn more about Regan by reading her follow the child.
